Cactus Head

“Cactus Head” was inspired by Barren Lands, a wonderfully illustrated and mysteriously written book by Brynn Metheney. In this book she describes the myth of the cactus head, a dog-like creature covered in cactus that travels along the edge of roads throughout the southwestern United States. Many have claimed they’ve seen it, but none have ever gotten close enough to discover its true nature.

I’ve long been intrigued by fables of legendary animals, but the cactus head stole my attention. Its elusiveness and strange appearance is different than any other cryptid from this region. I believe it gives a glimpse into the still undiscovered parts of the West.
